People say "made for each other,"
Stamp us with a label and say "wait,"
Look at my face and say "love,"
look at yours and say "fear."

People say "end up together,"
Put us in a box labeled "someday."

We were up one night and fighting about every little thing we'd ever done,
Every tiny paper cut, pouring lemon juice which flowed acidic like it was bleach
Down faces and arms,
Utterly ignoring the gaping wound right at our core.
We were up one night ripping each other apart,
Starved wolves unleashed
And aiming to kill.

We were up one night trying to end this
And you told me during a silence that
You knew you would never be finished.

"I'll always come back,"
You said and I could hear the sadness in your voice
But not understand its origin.
"I'll always come back to you because it will always be you.
I'll always come back because I don't know what I am without this."

I lied through my teeth just then,
I lied and said I didn't believe you.
In a way maybe it was my head talking,
Hushing up my hammering heart.

"Shut up. Listen to me.
Even if the day comes, the day might come,
When I don't want to look at your face or hear your voice,
I'll always come back because you are too much of me to be left behind."

I try not to tell the story,
Try not to think about it
Because my heart is getting louder again,
No matter how my head tries to silence it
There's still that nagging beat.
Hopeful.
Powerful.

When I talk about that night,
People say "meant to be,"
Put us in a column alone marked "forever."

They look into my eyes and say "she loves him,"
They look into yours and say "he loves her,"
They look at the chasm between us and say "time heals all wounds."

I try not to talk about
The one night we stayed up making our best effort at catastrophe,
Bound bulls in a china shop unable to smash.

I try not to talk about
Our love like stubborn glass;
No matter how hard we hit it resilience somehow won out,
Somehow we couldn't quite pulverize.

I try not to listen
When they tell me that it's "fate" that we'll be fine,
Tell me that it's "age" and "circumstance" and "immaturity" keeping us apart.

People say "made for each other"
And I want to believe them.

My hammering heart
Wants to believe them.

Hopeful.
Powerful.

"I'll always come back."
WOW. That got long. But I think I like it. :]

i always am relieved to discover others who have had such an enormous emotion and trading of everything from enzymes to kinetics and beyond the route of science to find that even when they try, they cannot unmake it. it's a painful connection at times. but to become something beyond yourselves, inside of each other... that is maybe the one thing we all live for...
